Project Description

Summary: This dataset is sourced from the USDA Economic Research Service Food Access Research Atlas and examines food access metrics across U.S. Census tracts, identifying food deserts and low-access areas. Tableau workbooks are included for interactive visual exploration. Prepared by the 2025 BSOS Data Curation Fellowship, Group 1.

Unit of Analysis: U.S. Census tracts

Time Coverage: 2019 (most recent USDA atlas release at time of curation)

Geographic Coverage: United States (all Census tracts)

Analysis Methods Included: Exploratory Data Analysis (Python/Jupyter), Tableau dashboard visualizations, High vs. low food access comparisons, State-level breakdowns

Key Variables: Food access indicators, low-income and low-access tract flags, distance to nearest supermarket/grocery store, state and county identifiers, population counts
